Weekly News 3/9/2020 – 2020 U.S. Amateur Team South Report

Raleigh Durham, N.C. 29 Feb – 1 March

The Huntsville Chess Club celebrated leap year by travelling to North Carolina for the U.S. Amateur Team South event at the Four Points by Sheraton in Morrisville, N.C.

Round 1

On our way, we discussed the need to name our team. At Charles’s suggestion, the name “Hunstville Rookets” was chosen. The rest of the drive was filled with speculation about who we would be paired against for the first round. With pre-registered entries not changing much in the previous few days, we had a decent idea that we’d be playing the top seeded team in the 2-day schedule and began some book prep for each of the opponents on our respective boards.

The next morning, we awoke to discover that we were seeded a bit lower in the tournament than originally thought. We’d be the 10th seeded team out of 24. Our prep wouldn’t pay off unless we played the top seeded team during the tournament.

The team we were paired against was a group of Italian speaking guys with their board 1 a strong 2310 player. Our team rating (1787) was about 300 points lower than theirs. There was a church group meeting next door who filled the planned silence with passionate yelling and proselytizing with not too family-friendly language. It was an interesting background to the normal expectations of peace and quiet. Charles was prepared for the possibility of a noisy playing hall and handed out earplugs. Despite being outgunned by rating, Charles and Pat managed draws against their much higher-rated opponents.

Round 2

The next round, we were a bit disappointed to be paired against a much lower rated team and even with the continued screams from the church group next door, soundly defeated them 3-1.

Round 3

The last round of the evening was also against a lower rated team, though not nearly as big of a difference as our 2nd round. We were thankful to have 3 of 4 boards decided in our favor in time to get some much needed rest. Charles battled a fiercely determined player on Board 1, but eventually got the predicted result for a clean sweep.

Round 4

This round, our opponents had a rating average 50 points above us. If there was any doubt we were there to play, there would not be after the round completed with us on top 3.5-0.5.

Round 5

The Huntsville “Rookets” prepare to start the final round of the tournament.

The last round of the tournament was filled with drama and anticipation. This time, we were paired against another powerhouse team with 2.5/4 points who had higher ratings on each board between 200-500 points. Our opponents were literally “out to lunch” for the first 20 minutes of the round. Cool heads prevailed and Charles and Joel scored upsets against their opponents and came away with the full point, while Pat ended with his opponent’s only draw of the tournament – giving us 4 points out of 5 and a 2.5-1.5 upset victory!

Joel provided real-time updates to the rest of the team about the results of Table 1’s games. If the top seeded team came out on top, we’d take clear 2nd! If they lost or drew, our final standing would be left up to the tiebreaks.

Results

Our team’s MVP, Charles ended the tournament with 4.5/5.0 which was enough to secure the Top Board 1 prize of a commemorative clock!

Unfortunately, the underdog team came away from the last round with a draw and our tiebreaks didn’t quite add up in our favor. We ended up finishing in 3rd on tiebreaks and the only group in the top 7 finishers with a team average lower than 2100. We finished 5 places above the next closest team for the U2000 prize, so that’s the trophy we took home (along with 4 commemorative chess clocks).

Top U2000 team of the 2020 U.S. Amateur Team South chess tournament!

I don’t think anyone could have predicted how well we would do during this tournament and we were all very proud of our team’s performance. We left the tournament site for home at around 8pm and though mentally drained and physically spent, we were in high spirits. Though there were stormed predicted for the morning, the team stopped a bit after 1am in Ashville, N.C. to rest up for the remainder of their journey.

The sun rises to greet the team before the rest of their drive home.

Tournament Cross-Table

Everyone on the team ended up with a net gain in rating points:

Charles +44

Joel +13

Pat +29

Tomasz +24

No Chess In Observance of MLK Day, San Francisco Chess Club Visit

No Chess This Week

The Library will be closed on Monday 1/20, in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Our next meeting will take place on 1/27.

San Francisco Chess Club Visit

Over some military travel to the SF area, I was fortunate to be able to visit the San Francisco Chess Club at the Mechanics Institute. WIM Rochelle Wu and her brother NM Derek (Sijing) Wu were there playing against each other in a tournament! It was kind of funny to think about seeing them all the time at UAH for Caesar tournaments and then again out on the West Coast. The chess world is a small one.

The tournament playing area was really nice. The lady showing me around even let me check out how they had connected their DGT boards for live streaming events, which was very informative. The club is open throughout the week and offers instruction to the membership that would satisfy even the most determined chess student!

I’d love to visit the club again if I am ever in the area with a bit more time, and I’d highly recommend that you visit if you have the chance.

Weekly News 1/6/20 – Brahan Springs Info, 2020 Amateur Team South Registration Info

Casual Chess at Brahan Springs

For the past 8 months, Willie Sandifer has been coordinating an additional chess event at the Brahan Springs Rec. center on Fridays at 6:30pm. This is another great opportunity to come on out and get in a few games of chess. Please support both Willie and our club with your attendance if you’re able.

2020 U.S. Amateur Team South Feb 29-Mar 1 in Morrisville, N.C.

The Huntsville Chess Club’s 2019 U.S. Amateur Team South team boards 2-4, Pat Dowd, Joel Friedman, and Larisa Friedman. Not pictured, since he’s taking the photograph, is board 1 – David Hayes.

Last year, we spontaneously fielded a team for the 4 vs. 4 U.S. Amateur Team South tournament in Kissimmee, FL. It was a lot of fun. This year, we’ve got a bit more time to plan.

Entry fees, transportation and lodging will be covered by the club for the team. If more people than necessary to field a single team is interested, we may have to pool our resources to make that happen. That would consist of an additional volunteer to drive, sharing rooms between 2 people, etc.

If you’re interested in playing, please complete the form at the bottom of the blog.

Note, you must be a member in good standing of both the Huntsville Chess Club and the USCF to play. We’ll plan to drive up on Friday February 28th and back on the 1st or the 2nd (depending upon what time the tournament completes on Sunday).

Right now, we’ll plan for the 2 day schedule. Selection criteria has not been determined, but will probably consist of a combination of rating and recent tournament and volunteering activity.
