Weekly News 9-24-2017

Greetings All!

On Saturday, September 23rd, Caesar Lawrence held this year’s Birmingham Challenge.  It was a great location and the competition was fierce!  There were quite a few familiar faces from the Huntsville area, and we did fairly well as a group.

Check out the results at Birmingham Challenge 2017

The registrations for the Chess in a Cave 2017 tournament keep coming in.  It’s going to be a great time!  Make sure you get your child(ren) registered before it fills to capacity!

Also, be sure to check out Help me Find a Better Move for a challenging chess puzzle submitted by David Hayes from this year’s Alabama State Chess Championship.

This week, we’ll be back at the Sunny Street Cafe on Tuesday at 5:30pm.  Hope to see you there!

Huntsville Chess Club Updates for the Week of September 3rd, 2017

Another exciting week of chess is both in the books and upon us!  The 64th Annual Alabama State Championship concluded yesterday, with quite a few familiar faces from the Huntsville area competing.

To see how everyone did, check out the 2017 AL State Championship Tournament Results.  David Hayes tied for the class B prize!

The tournament was held at the luxurious Ross Bridge Resort in Birmingham, AL.  It was definitely one of the nicest venues I’ve seen for hosting a chess tournament.  Kudos to Balagee  Govindan and the Alabama Chess Federation (ACF) for organizing and conducting a great event.

On Sunday, ACF elections were held for all positions.  Of note, Huntsville Chess Club Members David Hayes and Paul Mulqueen were re-elected and elected for the office of Vice President and Secretary, respectively.   Gerald Larson was chosen to serve as the Alabama Chess Delegate for the Denker Tournament of High School Champions.  Congratulations are in order!  We support you all and wish you the best of luck in your new roles in Alabama Chess.  We know you’ll make us proud.

Your regularly scheduled chess meeting will be tomorrow at 5:30pm at the Sunny Street Café in Madison.

Lastly, be sure to check out tournaments that have been recently posted:

Birmingham Challenge

National Chess Day Scholastic

Huntsville Halloween Classic

Hope to see you all Tuesday night!

Chess Tomorrow and Misc. Important Upcoming Tournament Notes

Greetings!

I made a mental note to myself a couple of weeks ago to send out a reminder about our weekly chess meeting earlier than 5:00PM the day of the event, to allow for folks to adjust their schedules if they need to move some things around.  Hopefully, this email reaches you in time to attend because we’d love to see you at the Sunny Street Cafe tomorrow at 5:30PM for some games!

If you tried to register for the 2017 Chess in a Cave tournament last week, but couldn’t, or if you registered and received a confirmation email, but did not actually pay through PayPal, please register now.  We had some issues with the registration form.  In computer-nerd speak, we had updates of website plugins that rendered our registration inoperable, in spite of intense testing beforehand.  It’s all running smoothly now, and I faithfully served as the guinea pig to register our son for the event.  Since then, we’ve had multiple registrations work out successfully, so please proceed with confidence!  We’re very excited about hosting this historic event.

Lastly, it came to my attention that in the time since I downloaded the 2017 Alabama State Chess Championship flyer from the ACF website, the location has changed and the flyer has been updated.  So, please take note of this location change to the Ross Bridge Resort in Birmingham.  I believe that is the only change that was made to the flyer, but to be sure, please check out the flyer for the 2017 Alabama State Chess Championship.

As always, feel free to comment or contact us if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Patrick

Chess Tonight at the Sunny Street Café

Don’t forget to come out and get your weekly dose of chess at 5:30pm at the Sunny Street Café!

We’ll also be conducting a quarterly HCC board meeting, so it’s a good opportunity to raise questions/issues and have your voices heard.  The primary topic for discussion will be a future can’t miss tournament tentatively planned for November of this year.

Hope to see you in a few hours!
