Weekly News – 7/1/19 2 vs 2 Tournament

This Week’s Plan

To kick off the first meeting of the month, we’re going to have a 2 vs 2 free, unrated tournament of a Quick or Blitz time control. Coordinate ahead of time or just show up and grab a teammate. As always, there will be those not participating in the tournament who will be playing casual chess.

2019 AL Quick and Blitz is in the Books

For those who haven’t heard, the Huntsville Chess Club hosted the 2019 AL Quick and Blitz Championship tournaments on Saturday, June 29th at the Hampton Inn in Hampton Cove. Participants came from as far away as Knoxville, TN. Yury Barnakov, from Birmingham was crowned the Quick and Blitz champion. HCC members Logan Richey, Joel Friedman, and Victor Lundy split the Reserve championship 1st place spot, with Logan winning on tie-breaks. Congratulations to the winners!

This week, our annual election will take place in the conference room adjacent to the playing area on Monday at 6pm. If you’re interested, please attend.

Tournament Practice

The Quick and Blitz State Championship tournament is on Saturday, 6/29 at the Hampton Inn in Hampton Cove. If you haven’t signed up yet, you can do that here. Take advantage of this week to challenge a strong player at the library and get warmed up! Everyone else is always welcome to grab a set, board, and clock and play a game at the time control of your choosing.

Alpha Zero Lecture 8/5/19 – Mark Your Calendars

Our very own David Hayes has offered to provide the club with an informative lecture on a very intriguing topic on Monday, August 5th at 6pm in the Library’s Auditorium on the first floor. Don’t miss it!

Non-Profit Status – Help Needed

If any of our chess playing membership has experience with transitioning an organization to non-profit status, please let us know. Our club is interested in heading that direction.

Election – Monday, June 24th

Officers and Members at Large are up for annual reelection on Monday, June 24th during our regularly scheduled meeting. If you’re interested in voting, please be sure to attend.

Weekly News 6/10/19 – Board Meeting This Week, Casual Chess Tonight

Huntsville Chess Club Board Meeting

If you’re interested, the HCC board will be meeting tonight at 6pm in the conference room adjacent to the playing area. We’ll have sets and clocks available for anyone who wants to play some casual chess this week, but probably won’t run an unrated tournament.

Any current, paid members of the HCC are welcome to attend the meeting and participate. If you’re interested in volunteering in any capacity, this will be an excellent opportunity to share your ideas and availability.

Weekly News 6/3/19 – Chess is Back!

Chess Tonight

We hope that you were able to enjoy last week’s chess hiatus with your families and friends. We’ll be back at the library this week. There isn’t anything formal planned, but we’ll probably host a free, unrated tournament and or tactics solving competition.

Exchange Student Hosting

Interested in opening up your home to a chess playing student from overseas? Nontapat is a young man from Thailand who plays Makruk (Thai Chess) and also enjoys playing Western style chess. He even on first place in recent Makruk tournament! He also likes to play basketball and watch movies. In the U.S. he hopes to share his culture, learn about your family, and try out some new sports. He is a very smart kid and very excited to live in the U.S. during the 2019/20 school year. Would you be interested in hosting Nontapat? Call Brittany Ortiz at (205) 617-4438. Weekly News – 5/27/19 No chess in Observance of Memorial Day

On Monday, 5/27, the library will be closed and we will be taking a week off in observance of Memorial Day. We’ll we back on June 3rd.

The Huntsville Chess Club brought 6 people to the Vulcan chess tournament on 5/25 in Birmingham. Results will follow.

We’re about a month away from the State Championship Quick and Blitz Tournament in Hampton Cove on June 29th. Register here now and support the Huntsville Chess Club. We don’t get many opportunities to host a state championship locally. The venue can only accommodate 40 players, maximum, so space is limited. Please take advantage!

!This Weekend! Vulcan Tournament Carpool Opportunity

Tournament info is located here. 4-Round G/60;d5. Premier, Reserve (U1700), and Rook (U1200) sections. You’ll need to be a USCF, HCC, and ACF member to play in this tournament.

This weekend on Saturday, Caesar Lawrence is hosting the 2019 Vulcan Chess Tournament in Birmingham, AL. If you are interested in attending, please email huntsvillechessclub@gmail.com asap! We’ll meet at the library and depart at 6AM sharp.

We always have a lot of fun on these trips, so please join us! If you haven’t played in your first chess tournament, it’s a great opportunity to come along and we can guide you through the process. Please also let us know if you need to borrow/buy equipment so we can bring it on Saturday.

Transportation slots will be first-come first serve. We can take 8 total. Let us know if you can make it now!
